BIOGRAPHY

Gwyneth Scally was born and raised in Washington, D.C. Her work is deeply informed by an early immersion in the worlds of politics and journalism; the malleable natures of truth and information are important themes in her paintings, as are the underlying psychological forces that shape the public worlds of mass culture and government. The artist’s father, William Scally, is a British journalist who covers the D. C. political scene, including the Senate and the White House. Her mother was raised in the Italian community outside of New York, providing the artist with an exposure to Catholicism that has influenced her use of symbolism and metaphorical narrative.

After receiving degrees in both Art and Literature, Scally moved to Arizona. She intersperses her work with travel to Latin America, Europe, Northern Africa, New York, Tibet, and China. In the summer of 2007, she will be participating in an artists’ residency at Pouch Cove, Newfoundland. She has exhibited internationally, and has received numerous grants and awards, including grants from the Phoenix Art Museum, the Arizona Commission on the Arts, the Tucson Pima Arts Council, the Southern Arizona Community Foundation, The Ruth Chenven Foundation, and the George Sugarman Foundation. The artist has spent several months at Red Gate Gallery Artists’ Residency in Beijing, China, and has traveled extensively in Tibet, documenting the monastic murals of the Himalayas. Scally recent solo show, “Jelly,” was exhibited at the Tucson Museum of Art in 2006, and the Mesa Art Center in February 2007. In the Fall of 2006, the artist was featured in the national publication, New American Paintings.
